Can the fumes emitted by an item with non-stick coating be toxic to birds?

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coated items heated to temperatures exceeding 500 F (260 C) can emit fumes which are hazardous or fatal to birds. Because birds have a highly sensitive respiratory system they are susceptible to emissions from a non-stick pan, as well as an inclusive list of things. Burning food, fireplace smoke, tobacco smoke, scented candles, oven cleaners, hair spray, incense, perfumes, and cleaning product fumes are among the list. Always provide your bird with good ventilation, and do not keep your bird near the kitchen. For further information on caring for your bird please contact your local veterinarian.
